Location underground

The HADES underground research laboratory is situated 225 metres below the SCK CEN site in Mol, in the heart of the Boom Clay formation, which is 100 metres thick in this location (at a depth of 190 to 290 metres). This clay layer runs under many municipalities in the Campine region, rising to the surface in the municipality of Boom, hence the name Boom Clay. The Boom area features a number of clay pits where clay is extracted and used to manufacture bricks.
